That's an expensive/ antique ceiling Those are usually hand crafted. Please post a pic when its completly uncovered.

No one wouldn't put wallpaper to cover the ceiling that they hate. To me it so stupid do this and what if the mouse some how get inside between the ceiling and the wallpaper and what would you be surprised if the mouse scare the crap out of you. nope.
Don't think that it's wallpaper, looks like a stretch ceiling. I have seen it before where they stretch a tarp or cloth for the ceiling. Could be from the way it tears.

what luck. after living in our 1930' s bungalow first home for 3 yrs, (sold it & moving to a new home) the foundation repairs showed a beautiful hardwood floor under the carpet I despised.... as I moved onto a 1970s shag. Ripped it out immediately in my fury.
