The Chagos Islanders were forcibly removed from their homes in the late 1960s and 1970s by the UK and US governments to make way for a US military base on Diego Garcia. They were relocated to places like Mauritius and Seychelles, where many now live in poverty and face marginalization. Although the International Court of Justice ruled the separation of the islands from Mauritius illegal, and international bodies have urged the right to return, the islanders have largely been denied this opportunity, though a recent deal transfers sovereignty to Mauritius while the base remains.
