So what is the trick? Dipping a Q-tip into Vaseline and wiping the perimeter of wall plate is particularly novel. In fact is better most people don't know this trick. Why? There are better ways to clean around wall plates, without using Vaseline. I feather duster would work better, and leave no greasy trail.

I think it's to make sure a draft doesn't come through the outlet. I used to use painter's tape when living in cold climate. Then you put in plugs into the outlets. No air escaping.
