Yes he is justified, what gives them the right to block the road and impede traffic? People have to go to work and do not need to put up with this crap. If you stop they surround you vehicle and start pounding and kicking on it and terrorizing the occupants. Anytime there is a protest, there should be a police presence, to keep them from blocking the road.

Try this for a defense. Your honor, I feared for my life. There was just me and hundreds of them. If I had stopped, they quite possibly may have injured or even killed me. See how that works against the illegal act of being in the road stopping traffic.
