i broke my jaw at 13 riding my ten speed. having you jaw wired shut during xmas holidays were torture. smelling all that good food and not able to eat any if it. when it was unwired, my bottom jaw felt like it was falling in my lap. unique feeling.

This is used after jaw bone surgery. Its calle Maxillomandibular fixation. Mandible is lower jaw and maxilla is the upper jaw bone.

Had a friend “eat the steering wheel” breaking his jaw in an automotive accident. The doctors meshed is teeth together to properly align his jaw where he could eat again once healed. Only unsolved problem is all the plaque and food buildup on the backside of the teeth… And yes, he was given wire cutters to have accessible 24/7 and forcefully open his mouth (thus possibly re-breaking his jaw) should he be choking on vomit.

I had a buddy who got kicked by a horse and had to have his jaws wired shut. The first thing he wanted to do was brush his tongue. He couldn't even open his mouth wide to eat steak at first.

I had the surgery...TMJ...IN THE LATE 70'S.. I had to carry surgical scissors as well. mouth is usually wired for 7 weeks.
