I've seen chickens sleep with their heads in their wings my parents had chickens when I was a child I'm 54 yrs old so I've seen a quite of bit things what's cruel is seeing someone ring a chickens neck that's what I can't handle watching so sad to me 馃槶

I had a rooster I got at a flea market when I was about 12. My grandpa who is 97 now (im 39) picked my rooster up and did this, showing me how to make it go to sleep. What I didn鈥檛 see was him planting an egg under the wing with the head. As I woke the bird the egg came out and he convinced me I didn鈥檛 have a rooster but a chicken instead. I鈥檒l never forget that. He pulled a good one on me.
When i was growing up my mom would walk out to the chicken yard and reach down, grab a chicken in each hand and wring their necks. Throw each one down to the ground then stick both in boiling water. Pull the feathers off them, swing the remaining feathers, gut them and we鈥檇 have chicken and dumplings for dinner the next day!

When I was a kid on my dad's farm, my brother and I had a game of who could put the most chickens to sleep at the same time - just this way. Didn't hurt them at all.

So much fun! Used to do that with our hens 60 trars ago. Learned it from an old farmer where we got a lot of our stuff for our hen houses and also birds.We just rocked back and forth. Made it easier to check the width of their vent, look for mites, other parasites and wounds. Not cruel, actually way less stressful for the bird and they were able to keep on laying on schedule.

My dad did this back in the 50s to show us kids how to put a chicken to sleep. They will doze until you wake them up. As little kids, we were so amazed! It doesn't hurt them as they will often tuck their head under a wing.
That really works. We had chickens when I was a kid and I did that several times. I don鈥檛 know who showed me, but it does work and I did it several times showing other people. That鈥檚 almost like putting an alligator on his back and rubbing his belly. That is supposed to work too, but I never tried that.
