I don't care if they say it's acceptable and it's a zipper method! that was not that somebody was trying to cut in because they think they deserve to! no chance and I would pull out a little bit to the right to make sure! I drive for a living and that I get angry about!
In the worst case scenario, the guy's going to put you 40 ft further from your destination. That means you'll arrive possibly 2 or 3 seconds later. If that upsets you, how are you going to feel, if something really bad happens to you?

The funny thing is a lot of the time it is quicker to detour around a traffic backup. I tend to detour mostly to keep me moving especially if I am driving a manual transmission vehicle.

I don't like it either and may or may not let the driver in. But, sometimes highways/roads are poorly marked and the driver may not have realized it was an exit only lane.
Me? That's easy I'd never let the driver in front of me and I was raised with consideration is a given, respect is earned. That driver showed no consideration of all the people it passed waiting their turn. I'd show the lack of respect for it by blocking the person. To me this is a form of bullying. I hate bullies.
