swim DOWN - you get below the hydraulic effect and it spits you out downstream. Knowing that literally saved my life when river raft flipped in a class 4 rapid in West Virginia.

swim down, then the waterfalls current will take you. swim up, and the backwash pulls you back in.

okay just like to say something I don't know everything but I took Swift water rescue here in Montana on the rapids for search and rescue and what you do in those situations you roll into a ball you put your head between your legs hold on your legs and let yourself roll out of that situation it's just hold on hold your breath and that s*** will eventually roll out you will roll out from that swiftness like I said we were taught when swimming in the river or anywhere doesn't matter even in the river is the most part I did you either swim to the left or the right because there's Eddie's and Eddie's are little teeny certain points on the side of the banks that'll bring it in you swim that way or to the other way but get into an Eddie and they'll save it too as well

I used to work on the Mississippi River unloading fertilizer barges with an excavator setting on a floating deck. In the middle of moving the barge up river, I had a young guy slip, and fall in the small 3 ft gap between the deck and the barge. I pushed the barge out so he wouldn't get crushed, but he kept going under even with his life jacket on. We told him to kick off his boots, so he did. Then he was able to stay up long enough to grab the rope, and we pulled him up. I know. unrelated to waterfalls, but just a reminder. Kicking your shoes, or boots off helps.

dive to the bottom, and the current will shoot you downstream automatically!

I would think they would have some safety person nearby. If she couldn't grab onto the rings. What would've happened? Live CPR training?

Most people who learn that lesson never come back to tell others about it.
