Common Misconception    •   Some claim John Hanson was the “first president of the United States” — this is not true in the constitutional sense.       •   The Articles of Confederation created a weak confederation with no executive branch.       •   The President of Congress only presided over meetings; he had no executive powers, army, or national administration.       •   The first constitutional President of the United States was George Washington (1789) under the new Constitution.
