You just have to find the ends where they are melted together and separate them. These are very strong when pulled, but takes very little effort to separate the ends.

All you had to do is find the middle and pull the plastic apart
let me tell you how to do it correctly...those plastic straps have a seam where it was heated to hold. simply pull the small tab on both sides .it comes apart no knife needed
grab the bottom strand and peel the band back and it will break easily. And you won't look like a fool.
