It's a sea cucumber, related to a starfish. If you mess with it or it feels threaten it spills its guts. There are five muscles beneath its thick skin which can be stripped off and used like clam strips. Very delicious if fried in butter or made into a chowder. Some cultures pickle its skin and consider it a delicacy.
