I retired as a First Sergeant of the unit that maintains the Dragon Lady. When landing the wing spand is so long, she can actually slow down to nearly a stop . The wing tips have a titanium plate under them. It skids only a few feet. The thing the Airman is inverting under the wing is called a pogo. There's one under each wing on take off they fall off. The best experience ever is riding in the chance car. The pilot can't see the ground, so at 100 mph a pilot drives the Charger down the runway, the U-2 comes down over top of the car. A pilot steers the car with one hand and talks the pilot down on the radio with the other. It truly is a thrill ride! Same on takeoff.

In the early 1970’s, a SS 396 El Camino was used to perform this function.

How do they land without ripping wings off

no, I can't believe that they would build anything without any kind of stability to take off and be able to land without any assistance, hell, I'll bet any pilot will tell you the landing of any aircraft is not as easy as it looks. Takes hours and hours of training and practice.🤔🫤

Now that...the U-2...is one badass jet! The capabilities of that thing are amazing. Pilots have to wear astronaut suits because this thing flies so high....if you find yourself wanting more info, there's plenty of books/articles and videos out there. Happy New Year everyone!! 🎉

What? They couldn't afford a couple extra wheels in the budget?
