Jaquwan Smith (sometimes reported as J-Kwon Smith) is the young Black man who was assaulted by former Warren, Michigan, police officer Matthew Rodriguez in June 2023 while being processed at the city jail. Rodriguez, who was caught on video punching Smith and slamming his head to the ground, pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights violation and was sentenced to one year and one day in prison. Smith filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city of Warren.
