it happens to me going 100 miles an HR with almost 80,000 pounds,,this ramp was on the left side not the right side going down i,80 in UT,, you talking about praying to God,I don't know man but I was having a conversation with him or somebody up there and I was told to pull my truck brakes and that would pop out my trailer brake knob and keep your feet off the brakes,I didn't ask questions I just did it,,and I was flying,than the air started going back into the air tanks and the brakes started going against the drums and it started slowing down than I was able to pull over to the right lane pavement.jump out of truck to make sure brakes were not on fire and it was but I keep extra water of 5 gallons buckets for stuff like that.I don't wanna here it ain't no God,I was listening to instructions like someone was talking to me.it works just like it told me to do. 😆. I'm retired now and again THANK YOU GOD IN HEAVEN FOR EVER.. AMEN 🙏😁
I bet any trucker that's ever had to use that says thank God they made these some of the interstates are so steep that even with using a jake brake they could end up run away it saves them and it saves anybody that would have been in their path if they kept going down the highway
So you go up, but then the brakes are out, so then you go backwards with no brakes until you come to flat ground again? Is that how it works?

This is I70 just west of the Eisenhower Tunnel. I have seen more than one semi up on that ramp. Saves lives, not only of the truckers who use it but of other drivers whose vehicles are not hit/run over by drivers who lose control either from mechanical failure or the stupidity of not gearing down as Colorado's signage tells them to.
In my 33 yrs as a dedicated semi driver, I had never used that off ramp, NEVER FAN YOUR BRAKES, YOUR ASK FOR TROUBLE, LOAD OR NO LOAD.
Running Bear & I were going down the OLD Bumble Bee pass hauling a D-9. Brakes caught fire. No escape ramps. 25 mph turns & we were doing WAY over that. Bear pulled me out of the seat & slid in & took over. Flames coming out of all our brakes & the Ravens low boy, bottom of hill there's a rest area a few miles away and he drove us into that ; we coasted to a stop in the far back. Brakes had all burned out but the magnesium trailer was on fire. I jumped out, yanked the 5th wheel & Bear drove the truck away from the trailer. Ran back & got the D-9 off too & all we could do was watch the trailer burn out. set the asphalt on fire under it & that burned out about 20 feet all around. Hell of a night. Bear had me open my door to jump in case we went over the edge. HAND OF GOD SAVED US THAT NIGHT!! What happened defies ALL the laws of physics. No way we should have made it. 100 mph on a 25 mph road. hundred foot drops most of that horrid road. Many died on that nightmare road.
should of had that Jake brake going the whole time and trying to down shift
those ramps saved many good drivers, don't be too proud to use it, a runaway truck can happen to the best driver

My husband used to drive truck and he always used to complain about a place called Downers’s pass? I’m not sure if I’m saying that right but I know it is a place that has truck run off paths.

The first time I saw one of these was in West Virginia. These are well worth having due to people going downhill In too high of a gear and too fast. once you burn up your brakes your in for a ride of a lifetime.

Have driven for 20 years. Most of it is mountain driving. And I drive heavy haul. If you need to use this ramp there are other serious problems. Not knowing how to drive or look over your vehicle, will kill you and others. Sad they invented this ramp, it shows how many knuckleheads there are. And DOT knows it.
Is it just me or what 🤷🏼♂️ you hear the jake brake come on just before he takes the ramp .. seems to me you’d want to try everything to slow down and a last ditch effort take the ramp 🤷🏼♂️
you see all them tracks in that runway truck ramp that from people going up and playing in it that is to save a truck driver and other people's lives not for them to play games on one thing I can say about California if they catch somebody in there they will take their after jail and they will be prosecuted that's all I know of it
He was Rollin! Luckily it all worked out for the best. No one got hurt. Besides the brakes, the only thing that might have caught any damaged was the back of his trousers!
Had this happen to me in Massachusetts on the Mass pike up near the border with New York over 20 years ago. It's a scary ride.

..dang!..almost ran out of room there Tex..have 2 on I-64 here east of Beckley..yeah they get used from time to time..9% on Abraham..ones halfway..the other..just before a right-hand turn..when this section of interstate first opened up..many a truck made the mistake of not paying attention..quite a few years back the second pea gravel driveway was added..and then a mandatory pull-off at the top to check your equipt was added..my advice..use the pull-off..that way you ease off slow..you run thru that pull-off..😆..may the Force be with you!..my take..rather have GOD as my co-pilot..
you know they call them things suicide ramps for a reason. lot of drivers been out there a lot longer than I have. 27 years is a pimple compared to a ancient driver. if you don't know how to go off the mountain and your equipment ain't good enough to go off a mountain you shouldn't be in that truck. I lost one with computerized brakes coming out of California I-15. long time ago let me tell you it ain't no fun I finally got it stopped a mile from the California Nevada border. everything underneath is carry your head. because of computerized brakes

so what's going to happen after that cop get there he'll get some tickets cuz that ramp is State property you'll get a ticket for damaging State property you get a ticket for operating a vehicle with defective equipment the brakes excessive speed when you got 60 or 70 or 80,000 pounds and you're going down to 6% grade yeah you going to pick up speed and that will also go in the driving record as a moving vehicle ticket
