God bless the captain and their families. A shame that this accident could have been avoided

I don't know how any of y'all can blame the boat captain. Them two crewman should've known better to stay completely away from that line while it was under tension. It seems to be a tragic accident and if there's any good to come out of it, hopefully they didn't fill a thing by the way it looks like it hit them both in the head/face. But if there's any blame to be put on anybody, it should be on in two guys. I don't even work on a boat and I know better than to stand that close to a line that's under that much tension to another boat. I wouldn't stand that close to the line on a lake to a pontoon boat 16 foot long! May they rest in peace may the good Lord bless them in the end they were just trying to do their job and made a tragic mistake.

did You think that getting a running start was going to be a good idea to move a 500 ton class boat with a thread? there was a lot of ignorance going on here. I'm not too sure who's trying to captain that boat is worth a dang!

I had a friend 45 years ago working on a boat towing barges of coal on the Ohio River killed by a steel cable breaking and decapitating him.

that was not a snap line I repeat that is not a snap line that was when the line got taught you can watch it in the water and repositions itself when the line gets tonked snapping the necks of the workers

This boat is not certified for towing, should have dubble stabilizer on the stern to keep cable/rope centered

Follow that line to the ship in background. Once taught the bow was to the right causing a sudden shift. Had they paid attention to the line might had been avoidable.

Watch the line attached to the ship in the distance. I initially thought the word snaps meant that the line breaks. The line does not break but snaps as in acts like a plucked guitar string.

Captain running too fast, jerking instead of pulling steadily until the towed vessel began moving. Crew members poorly trained. Should not have been allowed near the tow line until tension was eased. Basic principles of towing ignored by all concerned.

The most number 1 rule, NEVER stand side of a rope!

ummm 300 tons? you do realize that there are differnt line sizes and types all with differnt break strengths. then there is tow wire with another set of sizes ans break strengths. you cant just round them all into one group. This video also doesnt show the line parting whwn it hits the deck hands, it simply came taught and slid over the tow bar. they should never have been standing anywhere near the towline when the boat was still coming into the line. basic seamanship. the failure eas on the Captain for failing to properly train the deckhands, coming Into the towline too quickly, and failing to clear the deck.

Captain should have been taking up slack at dead slow with crew under cover till the slack was gone .. and drag on the towed vessel had stabilized .. seawater drag will pull the line ,, but load will cause it to move suddenly

A tow rope or cable , even a small one, can snap and release tremendous energy. We use them on our farm , they demand a lot of respect ! Stay away from them when under load !

Tragic end to their lives, which was avoidable, had proper Safety Measures been in place. The Captain of this Vessel should be held accountable for these two deaths.

avator

If they were greenhorns, they might not know how the line will snap taut. So it's up to the captain or the deck boss to keep them away from a thick taut towing line like that. 🤔
