Detroit diesel known for runaway surge. these engines can also bump start in reverse. Basically a 2 stroke. Just diesel

For those who don’t know, that engine was almost another statistic. It was almost a diesel runaway which is when the engine starts feeding itself fuel until it kabooms itself, or the air supply is cut off to stop the combustion. Like what this man did, well done.

good job man, only other way that engine would stop is by killing itself and self destructing due to all that power

So the diesel engine started to overheat which causes the gas to ignite even without spark, this is called “runaway diesel” but if he didn’t cover the intake (turbo) and suffocate the engine then it would’ve revved so high the engine would’ve glowed orange and red from getting thousands of degrees

Because diesel engines ignite fuel through extreme compression rather than spark plugs, they can run on the vaporized engine oil uncontrollably. The engine will rev faster and faster, ignoring attempts to turn it off with the key, until it either runs out of oil or completely self-destructs.

This is called runway diesel, and my personal opinion. He did the best thing he could’ve done starved the engine of air.

Almost hit that 88 mile an hour mark sitting still. I'm not even sure if that's possible but either way doc would be proud.

On a Detroit engine, also referred to as a “screaming Jimmy” they have unit injectors (one fuel injector per cylinder) and are controlled by the governor and a rack assembly. If the rack or governor hangs up it can run wide open till destruction. Since it needs both fuel and air to run, and the governor or rack is running maximum fuel the only option is to smother it for air. I always had a hard back service manual ready whenever adjusting the rack.

I have seen clipboard get sucked right in That’s when you get the heck out of there. Big mess all over the motor pool

That’s why you always have a piece of wood that fits over turbo intake, handy

It was either the turbo or the whole engine

hubby had this happen and he pulled off the side of the freeway, jumped out, quickly removed his shirt then stuffed it in the air breather, saved his truck.

Note to self make a pre made cover to seal the turbo from air when testing should the engine run away. 👍

Depending on the size of the turbo, it could literally "suck the flesh " off your hand. always use something else to block off the air intake. one problem of some "run ways " can be the oil line for the turbo. Should it leak, the engine will suck up said oil and run on it.

that's how you stop a runaway engine on a rig floor in the oil field used to carry a round steel plate with handle on my field truck when I was a diesel mechanic 🙋🏽‍♂️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
