They weren't carbon fiber blades. they had to have a steel core. In Viet Nam, we occasionally had to chop down through the upper canopy in order to get our 175' cable to the ground, to pull people out. Not recommended, but when you have to get people out, it worked and was worth it.

I had to have a rescue helicopter come and get me during a severe miscarriage once, 25 years ago. It was amazing what the pilot had to do to rescue me. I’m so thankful, even though I went through such a loss. 🥰🙏🏼

the main rotor blades are not cheap. you don't want to damage them or get them out of balance. Excessive vibration can cause metal fatigue that leads to cracks and broken parts. That can lead to a crash later. That is why helicopter maintenance is more frequent. Had he clipped his tail rotor he would have lost control and crashed. That could have become very messy.
