Gen Z-ero Super Hero. Can't figure anything out! Gen X here, and I know nothing about this, but I'm guessing 1 is 87 and 1 is 93. That would mean somewhere inside there is a blending mechanism that combines the 2 to make the 89!🤔 Genius!

Yes, the MIDGRADE (89) is blended at the pump. It’s 50% premium (91) and 50% regular unlead (87)

Most gas stations only store two types of gasoline underground: regular (87 octane) and premium (91 or 93 octane). The third option, mid-grade fuel, isn't stored in a separate tank. Instead, it's created at the pump by blending the regular and premium fuels in a precise ratio. The two pipes you see are for the two different grades of fuel stored in the tanks, with the pump itself acting as a blending mechanism for the mid-grade option.

The dispenser is a blender. It has a computer controlled blend valve to mix high and low grade fuel to derive a mid grade. Less expensive than maintaining 3 underground tanks.

Seriously the fuels regular no lead and supreme no lead is blended at the dispenser. Most stations only stock regular and supreme in underground tanks

In the '60s, Suncoast gas stations had 6 octane selections from 2 tanks. a proportion valve or valves made the blend. It was leaded gas then also.

Did the guy think they stored 3 grades of gasoline? I just assumed that everyone knew mid grade was a blend of the regular and premium.

one of the pipes is "Regular Unleaded", one pipe is "Premium Unleaded", and the mid grade gas uses gas from both pipes equally
