I think it was them fishing. Someone hooked something huge and started to get pulled overboard. The other two went to help him, and were pulled over with him. They didn't have a chance to get the life preservers because they thought they could help the man. Then the boat was still running on idle, like the do when you're fishing in the ocean, and it got away from them, leaving them to drown. When their bodies started to smell, ocean creatures started eating them. Sharks will do just that, which there are many species. There are lots and lots of them out there too. Once the bodies had their internal organs eaten, and with nothing left to bloat and keep it floating, their bodies sunk to the bottom where the trash eaters live like crabs and other bottom feeders. Nothing paranormal. Just a logical explanation
