This happens sometimes with hotels, especially if you prepay. I've never been to a hotel in Thailand, but i have heard stories of hotels not wanting to refund the money. A guest literally needing to go through hell and back to get their money back. Another perspective is that maybe he experienced a scam like this previously and was angry that it was happening again. I'm not excusing his behavior because I find it deplorable, but I always try to at least understand a person's behavior.
