basically there was a very rich distinctive family in the town that the jeweler was very familiar with the claim that that pendant that had been stolen 10 years earlier. when they got to the jewelry store the jeweler verified that it was the real thing and then secretly hit his alarm button so the police would come. he gave him back the necklace but he was arrested by the police after such and went to trial for stealing it. in the end a man who was best friends with the guy who gave him the pendant (also a member of the family claiming it had been stolen) testified that even though he look like a bum he didn't used to be and he was best friends with the guy who gave it to him. So he was acquitted and allowed to keep the necklace. FYI
