It happens when you've worked hard for so long and you knew it might be a problem for you when you got older, but you just couldn't quit because too many people depended on ya. And now, his back shows the stress it has been under for so long, but he doesn't stop because he needs it for himself. This kind of stress only happens when you've worked the "can't see" shift. That's when it was so dark outside that you couldn't see how to walk to work, nor could you see how to get back home.
