You have to understand the cops point of view. They heard gunshots. They are automatically going to investigate. And when the car backfired it did sound like gunshots. He wasted THEIR time because THEY can't tell what an actual gunshot sounds like. I life in a neighborhood where there are loud cars. a lot of fireworks. and, occasionally, gunfire. I can tell the difference from inside my house. Pitiful.

I had a 2003 Chevy Impala with a 3.8 L. V6 that did that same shit and had the factory exhaust. The ignition module under the coil packs went bad causing random cylinder misfires. Sounded like gun fire. Took me a couple of hours but eventually figured it out. That sound is usually unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust system.
