He had every right to seize it! The Trump administration says the tanker was already under U.S. sanctions for years because it was part of an illicit oil shipping network tied to moving Venezuelan and Iranian crude. U.S. officials and the Attorney General framed the seizure as enforcement: the ship was transporting oil that violated sanctions and potentially supported foreign terrorist networks, so they executed a warrant and boarded it. From the Trump team’s perspective, this is a legal action to enforce sanctions and crack down on sanctioned oil trafficking — not random theft.

The Skipper was flying a flag of Guyana. However, the Guyana government said the vessel was not registered in Guyana and plans action against the misuse of their flag. That would seem it could be seized for flying a false flag. However, the question I have is did the US know this prior to its seizure? The ship’s Captain and his officers should be turned over to Guyana for prosecution. I doubt if the regular crew knew the flag was false.
