American History: The Statue of Liberty was a gift to commemorate the alliance of France and the U.S. during the American Revolution and to celebrate freedom and democracy. A pivotal French contribution was the naval blockade. The French victory at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, trapped the British army and led to their surrender, securing the American victory. This direct military and naval support, combined with diplomatic recognition, tipped the balance of power, making American independence possible. Also, the French government did not pay for the Statue to be built. It was paid for by the French people in 1881 through a creative fundraising effort. This had nothing to do with us fighting the Germans for them. It was they fighting the British for us. This is well documented.
