Frank Caprio (1936–2025) was an American jurist and beloved Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court, best known for his compassionate rulings on the television program Caught in Providence. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, to Italian immigrant parents, he worked as a teacher before earning his law degree at Suffolk University. Appointed to the bench in 1985, Caprio became a household name decades later when clips of his courtroom went viral for their empathy and humor in handling everyday cases. Dubbed “the nicest judge in the world,” his approach earned widespread admiration and multiple Emmy nominations. Beyond the courtroom, he dedicated himself to public service, education, and scholarship programs supporting underprivileged students. He retired in 2023, with the Providence Municipal Court renamed in his honor. Caprio died on August 20, 2025, at age 88, leaving behind his wife Joyce, five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
