People coming from Africa are called Africans. Their children, born in the USA, are called African-American. Their children, born here, are called ... Americans! Three generations! Once you get to the third generation, you drop that "home" country identifier and become plain ole Americans.

if you are born in the United States, you are not an African American. just like you're not an Asian American, you're not a Mexican-American. you're a plain old American to be any other. you have to be born in the country that you say that is your nationality and then be naturalized in the United States

As a native born American Black, not a naturalized American born in Africa, I despise the term African-American... which is used to differentiate 'Blacks' from other 'American born' ethnicities who are identified as strictly American. As well as from White American naturalized African natives such as Charlize Theron and Elon Musk (and these are FIRST generation Africans). I was not born in Africa, I need a passport as a foreigner to visit Africa, Africa does not identify me as one of their long lost citizens, I do not speak African languages. My mother's lineage is Black /Cherokee Indian and my father's lineage is Black / Louisiana Creole. Yet, because of my physical appearance... thanks to the KKK Jim Crow 1 drop law and Democratic politicians like Jesse Jackson who seek to emtionally tie American Blacks to slavery, orgined out of Africa,... I'm expected to check the 'African-American' box... wrongfully, indefinitely and into infinity. Hell no!!
