you should really go find and read the letter the French prime minister Jules Ferry wrote to Grover Cleveland our standing president in 1884. the letter was directed to Cleveland congratulating him on his presidential victory the year prior. in this time the war of the pacific was just ending and alot of south amaerican countries were in shambles. Jules Ferry used the statue of libery to buy favor with the American government so he could continue his reign of colonial expansion into south America.
