The reason everyone thought the country was united was the fact that we didn't have the internet and social media to voice our differences back then
Actually, that’s not true. The Democrats always hated what the Republicans stood for. In fact, they hated it so much that they even had their own elected Democrat assassinated because he wanted peace and he won the pull out from the Vietnam war so they had them executed in plain sight.
The education system created by the legislative and judicial branches of our government created a bunch of indoctrinated, an educated and ignorant citizens with no knowledge of our government, how it works or our Constitution, or their rights under our Constitution! thankfully, many do not immediately and blindly obey these entities like the mainstream media and these government stooges, and choose to educate themselves beyond that, and to research the truth instead of obediently believing everything they're told! those on the left will loyally, obediently do whatever they're told by the media and these government entities (even though they're not aware they're government entities), rioting, looting, destruction and even murder is just part of what they're willing to do, because that's what they were taught! hopefully more and more people will break free from this dangerous and evil, leftist-centric methodology.

What you stated is spot on. What has changed? Yes internet but when it’s elected government officials doing it I think is the worse part that is not being leaders in my book. All the insults and name calling and just the hate because of who you voted for is unreal to me. I think the Democratic Party has just changed so much I don’t even recognize them and their policies. All the exaggerations on everything Trump does or says, all the corruption that is coming out with proof from the Biden administration and family. I feel we all need to get back to common sense, government officials need to act like adult leaders and remember they represent all citizens in their area not just their party, our boarders are secure and we all need to work together to get illegals back to their own countries and focus on what America and it citizens need. I also don’t want to look to the government to fix all our problems and for them to control everything I like freedom.

I'm 73 and I was fortunate to meet a few presidents then..they came to our grade schools and weren't afraid to sit with the children around them and interact..sad theses times are gone
