As intelligent a man as Ronald Regan was there are stark differences between his presidency and Donald Trump's. The country was battling high federal interest rates coupled with crippling inflation immediately following Carter's term and starting Regan's first term in 1980, then came not only a national, but global recession. So yeah, low tariffs may have helped drag the U.S. out of one of the worst economic times of its life but it's hardly applicable now that the economy is doing relatively well, inflation is negligible and Federal interest rates aren't nearly as high as they were in the 80s. The amazing part is this is still managed under the fact we have 36 trillion dollars in debt, a problem the U.S. government didn't have during Regan's administration. High tariffs are inherently designed to incentivize corporations and businesses to trade within the U.S. and that helps promote jobs, increase domestic purchases and ultimately drive down cost.
