Eye contact evaluation. if a dog holds a stare and doesn't look away, don't touch it... it doesn't trust you Get low, arm low/45°, bent fingers offering only a triangle 📐 FOR THIS VERY REASON. I grew up with dogs. I trained my own dogs. I trained my mom's dogs I trained my neighbor's dogs I put my hand into Vans and pick up trucks to pet dogs. I don't get bitten. I can read a dog better than I can read a person.... and I trust a dog more than I ever trust a person
I wish to say in our little city of Sierra Vista a elderly woman od 83 and her very tiny yet loving dog she had for 14 years was walking home from her last walk of the evening, opened her gate to the back yard all of a sudden 3 pit bulls attacked her and her dog killed them both blood all over the place one police officers finger was chewed off he in defense shot one dog but elderly lady and dog were killed on the spot what surprised me is they are still in court about this incident it happened in 2023 can you imagine that????? It was in the Paper that I Had read.
The dog in this video is not a pit bull. it looks more like a shepherd.

i was bitten in the face when I was in the 3rd grade, the dog came up to me very currious, and I was down on my knees showing this german shepard my hand to let it know that I was not a threat. She came up smelled my hand, licked my hand, and let me pet her, than in an instant showed me her teeth and lunged and bit me in the face on my nose and cheek. in a flash i had blood running down my face and into my mouth!

this German shepherd definitely wasn't wanting the attention. probably thought she was going to feed it then realized she had nothing.
I never put my hand down to begin with. I let them smell me, watching their demeanor, and if all is well then I’ll let them smell my hand. I’ve always told people to do the same thing with my dogs and mine weren’t aggressive.

Been there done that with a dog dragging himself down a street. So sweet then he ripped an entire chunk off my forearm. Found out he was rabid. I still pet but I’m so much more observant. Rescue is not safe sometimes. You learn a lot about dog behavior indicators.
Welp after flinching look at his eyes for one that is not a friendly face on that dog!!
What kind of dog is this!! I ask the owner first before I pet any dog!! Usually Labs Collies or Goldies i just pet!!

Never offer hand to dog that’s licking lips on approach. Lesson learned.
The proper way to let a dog sniff you is to make a fist, pointing down, with your thumb tucked in. Unless it is an unusually large dog, the dog can not get your fist in his mouth. You NEVER offer a "flat hand" that could be ripped off!
oh I do have to say unless she was videotaping this herself I really don't know how it got on tape I don't know how it got cut like that but who knows everything on the internet is still something else
If you were to offer a hand like that to my brother’s German Shepherd he would attack you. The best way to do anything is ignore him/her and if it’s interested it will then approach you and only then pet it without offering a hand

poor lady. She won't do that again. I remember a few years ago there was a case of this couple who were lawyers and they lived in an apt building in NYC. They had 2 big presser canarios. Neighbors complained be cause they would take them out without a leash and these were monstrous dogs and the dogs had normt been well behaved when they were in public. One day their neighbor was going into her apt carrying groceries and the other woman with the dogs opened her door and the dogs attacked the lady and killed her. They went to prison.
