Human beings have a remarkable capacity to conform. When surrounded by others acting in a certain way, we often follow suit, even when it feels wrong. History bears witness to this, as sepen in the actions of the German population under Hitler — a leader who, ironically, was under the influence of powerful drugs. The horrifying ideologies that led to genocide were, inl part, enabled by this collective conformity. Reflecting on that era, one might wonder how they would have behaved in the same circumstances. It’s a sobering thought that, under similar pressures, many of us might have followed along, even when we knew it was wrong. We must consider how we can regulate and shape the internet to protect the next generations. Just as we once regulated television, we need to find ways to ensure the internet doesn’t lead us down a path of degradation.
