I think you get searched again when leaving so he probably knew they were gonna find it upon leaving and decided to give it up first. makes more sense, knowing they were gonna find it, and they didn't give him any leniency for doing the right thing because they knew they would have found it regardless and knew he only did it cuz he was about to be searched.
