When I was 12 years old a 12 year old white boy called my little brother the big N I walked up to him and said my brother said you called him the big N, he said I did and I will call you the same thing. I punched him and he fell on the ground. I went back to my apartment. later that evening the military police came and took me and my dad to their office. While my dad talked with the police I remember swinging my legs in a big chair. After awhile we went home. Noone in that neighborhood ever called me or my younger siblings any names.

it is about intent and power. if you read slave narratives, enslaved people used the word because the slavers used the word. I don't use it but I have no problem with it being used in literature, plays, film to depict an era in which it was used historically or culturally. My question is why would a white person want to say it? Black people have explained why some Black people use it. But what say you, white people? I saw Delroy Lindo on one of those morning talk shows. The host, a white man, started talking about the N word and the fact the couldn't use it but Black people could. Mr Lindo told him he could use the word. "Come on I'll say it with you," he said. The host said "You know I can't say that." The point was he could say any word he wants but he gotta be ready to deal with the consequences. And if you know the word coming from you is hurtful and derogatory, why would you want to say it?

Language has context. Just like you may call a loved one honey or baby — but you wouldnt call your boss, teacher, or a random stranger that. Well its the same thing with the N word. You have to know your audience and community and the context in which you’re using it. And as a general rule you don’t get to say any woods that dont apple to your own specific demographics.
