And braids actually date all the way back to 793 AD, over 30,000 years ago with MANY other historical origins. The Iron and Bronze Age cultures from across Europe, Asia, have depictions of braids including the Greeks, Persians, Israelites, Canaanites, Arabs and, Ancient Egyptians.

When I worked as a stylist with 18 other stylists at Macy’s hair salon, I was the only one who was willing to work on black hair. Yes, I am white. And yes, I had several customers who were black.Black hair, white hair, Asian hair, straight hair, curly hair, it is all hair. And as a licensed cosmetologist, you know how to work with all these different types of hair.

My sister is very light skin, we are Black Latino women and she just happened to be born with the light skin Latina tone but she is also a beautician who specializes in ethnic skin in hair. She's very successful! She is requested three to one over the darker skinned women in her salon. Skills are skills no matter what race you are!

I went to cosmetology school in 1984. The students were predominantly African American. I am Caucasian. I begged to learn how to work on African American hair. I was told no because I wouldn't be finding a job in an African American salon. I was upset and rarely had clients because there were few White clients, except for old ladies' perms and sets. Fast forward to 2025 and, low and behold, my granddaughter has thick, curly African American hair! If I was taught back in the 1980's I would have gained experience to be able to do my grandbaby's hair. What's the hype here? No one is born knowing, and no one is born hating! These qualities are learned . . . one for good and one for bad.
Sick of the double standard. If the roles would reversed, we would never hear the end of it.
