You're not supposed to leave bags/luggage unattended at airports, it's considered a security risk. I worked at O'Hare for a few years and once saw a bomb squad come in to investigate luggage that was unattended for too long. So the silver haired lady was wrong leaving her bag there to hold the seat in the first place. And seats are up for grabs if you're not in it. White haired lady was in the wrong
