I have a gmc and no you don't need the fob to put it in gear. we went fishing at a lake as big as a city. my wife dropped me off and then went 12 miles to the other side of the lake. I had the keys. when she shut the car off, she realized I had them. we had to call someone we knew to come get the keys to take them to her.
