im a blk guy in the middle of the hood n even i know that in the 1700s new York was swampy and hard to develop so they came up with the idea to drive wooden beams into the mud upright and close together to form structures in the mud and expand docks and shipping lanes and use what ever wooden debris they could find in order to build foundations on top thus expanding the city because it was common practice they used anything in the swamp the could find ,dead trees,pine logs,sunk boats,etc.........
