you don't have to add anything, and you can do this. Just wash and slice the cuke. add it. in 2 days they taste good and are nice and crunchy.

I just put the pickling cucumber slices right into the jar when the regular pickles get low and they always taste great

I've been making similar for near 40 yrs. Though I peel the cucumber, slice thinner, omit the evoo, and invert the jar before refrigeration.
