or here me out don't drill a giant whole in the front just bolt to the side then you can even double up the chain and you don't completely destroy the strength of the wood by ruining the structural integrity of it

Instead of cutting the large hole, get an eyebolt, then drill the hole for the eye bolt on the side where you want to attach the chain. then attach the carabineer to the chain and hook it on the eyebolt. This way do not weaken the post and the post won't rot where you drilled the large hole.
