if in a situation you need to open the can but don't have a opener you can set the can on a flat surface like concrete and spin it essentially sanding down the joint holding the lid to the can.

I have used the kind that had the knob you turned to open cans of soup. Later on I got an opener that opened the cans without creating sharp edges on the sides of the “lid”.
