But color coding doesn’t remain accurate if developments increase the demand on the water system. It does give a ballpark reference for fire engineers.
According to some sorces the bonnet (top) and cap colors identify flow. The barrel (body) identify ownership, i.e. yellow is public, red is private.
Unfortunately in my state, all hydrants are yellow, with no other markings. Some towns even have theirs painted like Dalmatians. I even seen one painted to look like SpongeBob bob

In the state of Indiana the fire department does not mess with fire hydrants.... They are the property of the water company Indiana American Water which takes care of maintenance flushing and repainting if needed
