idiots.. both the sperm and the unfertilized egg are considered living cells that have the potential for life and possess characteristics of living organisms, such as metabolizing energy and movement. However, neither can become a new individual on its own, as they only contain half the genetic material needed for a full organism. They each have a limited lifespan and will die unless they meet and fuse during the process of fertilization.
