No, it’s not your right of way. The right of way is to the vehicle already in the lane. Your responsibility is to use your gas and brake pedals to merge safely into traffic. You don’t have to get in front of everything, you can pull in behind them and then pass later.
You did not have the right way the truck driver did. It's your responsibility to get on a freeway and yield to traffic, so you are either able to get in front of them or behind them safely. But it's not their responsibility to slow down and let you in. So this accident was one hundred percent your fault. the truck driver was not at fault at all. I'm sure the police and your insurance told you that.
I hate to break it to you but you were merging on to the highway. Therefore you do not have the right away. What you should have done was either speed up to get in front or slowed down to get behind the 18 wheeler. But the accident that happened was your fault.

sometimes when you’re merging onto the highway, there are a lot of people behind you that are also speeding trying to get up that speed to go onto the highway and I have found myself in this position. That semi truck was way bigger and he was a little bit behind you so he should’ve slowed down a little bit to let you in. slowing down so much could’ve possibly caused an accident behind you as well. I’m just saying it’s all about being courteous and you probably should’ve sped up a lot to get in front of the semi but he also should’ve slowed down just a hair and it would’ve been fine.
I don’t rely on truckers slowing down and being courteous —- I hit the brakes and get behind the truck where I know I stand a chance of avoiding an accident . I have a style of driving that differs from many drivers but my style avoids what happened to the pick-up truck .

No, actually, so many believe they are among the privileged that they have to be in front of a tractor trailer, but in order for you to do that you can not be traveling at the same speed. To get there safely, you either really floored the gas and sped way faster or slow it down, let the traffic already there to pass and merge safely. You are merging on a fast lane. The best for you to do is slow down. You may even have to stop before merging. This may happen often, especially coming from a rest stop exiting and re-entering from fast lane.

You had a yield sign on the left you failed to heed to. You deserve everything that happened. They put yield signs instead of stop signs to allow a steady flow of traffic as long as you don’t cause any impact to highway traffic. If they have to step on the brakes because you are trying to enter then you need to slow down or stop and wait to enter when cleared.
