The officer grabbed onto to the door so he didn't get ran the fuck over, he also was concerned about the child getting into a high speed chase would have ended catastrophically. The officer didn't fire blindly into the car they were point blank range into the man's body. The simple fact that he chased the car down the street to make sure the child was okay goes to show you what his main focus was to protect the child
