First off it is not a clip. It is a magazine, and there is no magazine in the gun so when he shot the gun, a piece of the bullet, most likely, the metal jacket flew down the magazine chamber hit the table and then bounced up and hit him.
I built 1911 45's and we call that case head separation. In a 1911, the lower rear of the case is unsupported and in this case it blew out. The force of the blast normally blows the magazine out of the gun. In this case there was no mag so the blast just shot straight down and out the mag well.
