There was an interesting study done by Virginia Tech where higher IQ people were put in social situations with lower IQ individuals. Instead of the overall IQ being lifted, they found that group dynamics and social acceptance caused everyone's IQ to be substantially lower. Basically, nobody wants to be singled out of the herd, or lose social acceptance, so they all behave to the standards of the lowest common denominator.
