The cecropia fruit, also known as an achene, is a rare, finger-like fruit native to Central and South America and the Caribbean. It has a unique composition of tiny, fleshy pieces surrounding a brown seed, and grows in clusters on tall trees. Appearance: When young, the fruit is green-yellow, taut, and upright, growing to 10–15 cm long and 1–2 cm in diameter. As it ripens, it softens, wrinkles, and bends towards the ground, turning grey-green. Texture: Fresh cecropia fruit has a gummy worm-like texture, but can be freeze-dried for a crunchy, light texture similar to a French fry. Taste: The fruit has a sweet, honey-like flavor with hints of maple syrup. Consumption: Cecropia fruit can be eaten raw or dried as a snack, or used to make jam or marmalade. Wildlife: The fruit is a popular food source for birds, monkeys, and fruit bats.
