Your FOB never stops sending its signal. Which is why you should put your FOB in a metal container at home. Thieves have a signal duplicator or amplifier that makes the car think the FOB is at the car door. They did a whole episode on this on Vice or Discovery channel.

as a mechanic, the easiest way to stop a thief is to just memorize where your starter relay is and pull it. it doesn't take but a second but a thief will not take the time to inspect your fuse box for a missing relay. They will just move on to another car to steal.

so what he was doing is he was using a signal booster to try to get the key fob signal so he's using that giant antenna holding it up to your door so that way he can get closer to the key fob and grab the signal

Don’t keep your fob too close to your car. It will continue to wake up periodically and check communication with the car. The battery will drain faster.
Think of it like the antenna to the radio. Boosts your signal right? Well this boost your key fob signal tricking push to starts into thinking the key is near the car.
These thieves are getting so brave. They obviously do not care about losing their lives.

What these guys are doing is called a relay attack. It’s not hacking the key fob. It’s not duplicating the key. They’re relaying the signal over a longer distance so your car thinks the key is next to it. One guy is near your home with a relay box(signal amplifier) and he is grabbing the signal from your fob and the other guy has a relay box near the vehicle and once the signal goes through both relay boxes, the vehicle thinks that the key fob is next to the vehicle. Once started, modern Dodge performance cars will continue running indefinitely. Even if the real key is not in the car. Many vehicles only shut off when turned off manually, NOT when the key leaves range-which is why they can drive it away easily.
