No official reason given, there are many theories. The prevalent one is that it was due to the design of the park in that the water park used lake water for swimming and for tube rides and this water could not be completely treated. There has been mention of amoeba (one kid did die of amoeba traced to River Country), and also some kind of bacteria in the water that was also extremely harmful and difficult to manage - both of these things came from what was ultimately lake water as the water base for the park. Although the water was treated, it may have not been safe enough for the long term. I also read that the Florida laws changed prior to closure to require that any water used in a water park is potable - not exactly sure that River Country water would qualify in this regard.Also, as Bay Lake aged, more and more uninvited creatures were at risk for making their way inside. Long ago, when River Country was operational, all of the resorts had swimming areas in the beaches outside - I vividly remember swimming in the lake outside Ft Wilderness, Bay Lake and Polynesian. However, there was a growing alligator threat (in addition to the above issues of amoeaba and bacteria) and all lakes were closed with lake swimming no longer allowed on property. It was only fitting that the lake water park was closed as well.
